thailand travelogue -  the party island, koh pagn ngan

03-09-2003 [20:45 LOCAL TIME] - Bayshore Resort, Hat Rin, Koh Pagn Ngan

I'm here on the party island also known as Koh Pagn Ngan. Let me just take a second to say a bit about last night. It was 01:00am and I was laying on padded rugs in a beach bar on Chaweng beach, Ko Samui, drinking Mai Tai cocktails, watching the stars with an illuminated palm tree for company. It was an amazing experience and one of my travelling highlights so far. Ko Samui was so lovely and if you ever need that perfect beach destination, believe me, Ko Samui is it!

I crossed over to Koh Pagn Ngan today by ferry (1 hour) and have a bungalow right on the beach, Hat Rin. Hat Rin is the location of the legendary "Full Moon Party" which happens to fall on the 10-09-2003. I'm planning to stay for that and then head back to Ko Samui and then out of Thailand for a while. My bungalow doesn't have air conditioning, so it's like an oven in here...a wall mounted fan is doing it's best to keep me cool. Showers and sinks only cater for cold water...Oh well, I guess I can't have everything.

Thought of the day: Life is a Mai Tai

thailand travelogue - thai boxing and stupid westerners...

04-09-2003 [12:00 LOCAL TIME] - Hammock, Bayshore Resort, Hat Rin, Koh Pagn Ngan

Just had an American breakfast - 2 fried eggs, bacon, toast and jam, orange juice and coffee for 100 Baht (£1.50 - very expensive) and am laying on the beach boosting my tan.

Just remembered something that happened on Ko Samui. Thai boxing is massive here and if you've never seen it, it's bloody and brutal. It's just like regular boxing except fighters can use any part of their bodies except the head. Punching and kicking is considered "girly" and is only used to taunt or "soften up" the opponent. Elbows and knees do the real damage and most fights end with a knockout...Anyway, to the story I've just remembered...we were walking up this alley, where all the bars and nightclubs are, and had a drink in the best looking one. You know what stupid western blokes are like when they've had one too many beers? One stupid such bloke started a fight with this tiny, thin, scrawny Thai guy and was giving it the big'em...credit to the westerner, he did manage to stay on his feet for about 15 seconds.

*ADVICE: DON'T MESS WITH THAI BLOKES...SOMEONE WILL GET HURT AND IT WONT BE HIM!

I saw a massive spider on the beach last night...when I kicked sand over it, it got aggressive and tried to attack me...BTW, I ran off.

thailand travelogue - do the biz!!

12-09-2003 [17:77 LOCAL TIME] - Montien House, Chaweng Beach, Ko Samui

Well I've left Koh Pagn Ngan and am back on Ko Samui, why?...basically the Thai immigration officials have changed the rules and you can no longer get Visa extensions (well not on Ko Samui - not sure about Bangkok). So I've got just five days to leave Thailand and get somewhere. Originally I planned on Laos but due to the time involved and planning necessary, I've changed to Cambodia...Whoosh!! Tomorrow, by midday, I will be in Bangkok again with just 4 days to arrange everything. It shouldn't be a problem though as I was recommended an excellent Israeli travel place who can "do the biz!" ('Connections' - Gulliver's end of Ko San Road). After a quick browse of the internet it seems that the Cambodian officials issue Visas on entry at the airports, so fingers crossed.

- Matt.
