| china travelogue - the sights of beijing... 02-08-2003 [18:20 LOCAL TIME] - You Yi Youth Hostel, Beijing |
| Well I made it to Beijing flying with Air China (I think they may have one of the worst safety records of any airline). Took absolutely ages to find the youth hostel as unlike Hong Kong, no one speaks any English and I mean, any English. I've been getting around the city using taxis which are the only thing in China which is cheap. I originally booked into a single room, but for a whopping £18 per night have now moved into a six bed dormitory - £7 per night. Went to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City and have also booked my train to Shanghai today with tomorrow hopefully being the Summer Palace. The hostel (You Yi) has a library/bar (weird) so spent last night drinking with Jerry, an American guy and Corrick, an English guy. - Matt. |
| china travelogue - again in the bookworm bar, You Yi Youth Hostel, Beijing 03-08-2003 [14:30 LOCAL TIME] - You Yi Youth Hostel, Bookworm Bar, Beijing |
Hi again from Beijing. Not much to say today. Spent most of the day in the Bookworm Bar library playing pool with Corrick and Chuljay (Korean). - Matt. |
| china travelogue - shanghai ticket shenanigans...
|
Had a large night last night - a great meal at a Thai restaurant followed by some bears in the Poachers Bar and then onto a club called 'The Mix' - a bit of a dump and the music was total hip hop. Corrick and I have decided to travel down to Xian together and will probably hit Thailand together too. We basically spent all night talking to a Canadian guy who is teaching in China and got back to the hostel at about 04:30am. So that's it, I've cashed in my train ticket and am planning to stay here another week. This is the first time on the trip where I've felt relaxed and content. Just a quick note on the language barrier here...when I went to the train station to get my Shanghai ticket cancelled it took a hour to communicate a refund. For some reason hand and sign language doesn't work here either. - Matt. |
| china travelogue - bijou inferno...
|
Had a really great day today, went to the Summer Palace with Corrick, Jerry, Chuljay and Kit (Canada) and it was fantastic. The weather was terrible and the air pollution sucked - visibility about 200m. Jerry and Kit are leaving tomorrow so we're planning another large night drink Bijou which is basically 'White Spirit' - 60% alc.
*BTW - Jerry, if you read this...thanks for getting me with that cattle prod. - Matt. |
