Inoculations

It’s best to think about inoculations early on to save you from the dreaded, “Going to the doctor and having them all in one big horse injection”, as some of the inoculations can make you feel pretty ill afterwards – I can remember having Tetanus / Diphtheria in one arm and Typhoid in the other and being unable to lift my arms for days. Also, some of the inoculations bring on flu like symptoms, which can make you pretty rough for a few days. So my advice is, start the jabs early!

Malaria prophylactics [info]

I stocked up on 100’s, and I mean 100’s, of Malaria tablets before leaving the U.K. which cost me a small fortune! – Think about where you are travelling too. If Asia is your first stop consider buying them there. Doxycycline is readily available over the counter on Khao San Road in Bangkok and it will cost you a fraction of what it will back home. Also, consider if you actually need them. As far as I’m aware only northern Thailand, the southern Mekong Delta region of Vietnam, and Siem Reap in Cambodia are Malaria… that said, Laos is Malarial countrywide. So think if you are going to those regions… if originally you plan not too and then change your mind, you can always buy Malaria tablets locally.

Please remember, I am NO doctor…get up to date travel advice from your GP and keep checking your home countries’ Foreign Office Website for the latest world health updates, as things do flair up... SARS was big whilst I was in Hong Kong and bird flu was about whilst in Asia. Don’t let things scare you though…
